Based in Chennai (formerly Madras,) SIPA serves more than 30 artisan groups, reaching nearly 10,000 artisans in southern India. It assists with planning, training, marketing and production. The association supports income generation programs and helps groups network and market products. SIPA receives some government funding support for training and capacity-building programs. SIPA is a member of the International Federation for Alternative Trade. SIPA works with Bethany Colony, which was established by a British nurse to provide ongoing care to recovering leprosy patients. The families of the patients live at the colony. About 300 wives of former leprosy patients are employed in handicraft production, making handloomed bags and linens. Bethany Colony is affiliated with the local Salvation Army leprosy hospital. Ten Thousand Villages purchases tote bags, placemats and tablecloths from Bethany Colony. |
