Howrah Women’s Association employs 20 women who make tiny doll ornaments and garlands. The organization, located across the River Hoogly from Kolkata (formerly Calcutta,) was started by a number of wealthy women who were concerned about the safety of domestic workers. A specific incident – the rape and beating of a young girl by her employer – served as the impetus for the organization’s formation. Today Howrah Women’s Association provides employment, health education, women’s rights awareness and informal education to the women.
